FORT HOOD, Texas – Firefighters with the Fort Hood Directorate of Emergency Services Fire Department continue to battle three wildland fires on installation ranges as of 2 p.m., Jan. 17.
The fire in the permanent impact zone on the west side of the installation has now burned approximately 750 acres. Air and ground crews are actively engaged, and it is currently 75% contained.
Overnight, the fire from the permanent impact zone jumped into Sugar Loaf resulting in a secondary blaze that has affected approximately 200 additional acres. While the fire is now about 90% contained, it has impacted some railroad ties which may result in heavy black smoke visible to surrounding communities.
The Clabber Creek fire has burned approximately 250 acres and is also about 90% contained.
Crews from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade are providing aerial support, and these efforts are expected to continue throughout the remainder of the day.
Due to elevated fire conditions, including low relative humidity and sustained winds, all training ranges have been closed as a precautionary measure. There is no danger to the public at this time.
Fort Hood fire crews will continue to monitor conditions and adjust response efforts as needed.
