FORT HOOD, Texas – Fort Hood officials are aware of a recent winter storm with sub-freezing temperatures causing exposed HVAC pipes to freeze and burst in four of the 100 barracks on post, leading to flooding in approximately 25 Soldier rooms.
Directorate of Public Works officials responded immediately to the reports and Soldiers were relocated as needed last night to new rooms with functional heat and hot water.
The pipe breaks, which occurred in the installation’s unrenovated barracks inventory, were reported Jan. 26. DPW is actively addressing the issue and has begun repairs. The current estimated timeline for completion is three to four days. However, this is contingent on the availability of necessary parts, and the completion date may be extended if parts require shipping.
“The well-being of our Soldiers is our top priority,” said Col. Mark R. McClellan, Fort Hood garrison commander. “We are working diligently to ensure all affected personnel are housed in safe, warm, and dry conditions while the necessary repairs are made.”
The majority of the breaks occurred in a barracks already scheduled for renovation in fiscal year 2028. The installation’s renovated barracks facilities were unaffected by the severe weather and performed exceptionally well.
Soldiers are encouraged to report any maintenance issues through the Army Maintenance Application website at https://www.armymaintenance.com/arma, as it ensures our teams can address quality of life concerns as quickly as possible.
