About Col. Hood and the post:
Col. Hood was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroic actions near Thiaucourt, France, during World War I. Then-Captain Hood directed artillery fire while under heavy machine-gun and shell fire. After losing his gun crew to enemy fire, he quickly reorganized and restored fire capability within minutes, enabling the continuation of combat operations.
Fort Hood spans more than 340 square miles in Central Texas and is home to III Armored Corps Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, 1st Army Division West, 13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command, and numerous other units. The installation supports more than 37,500 Soldiers and Airmen, 172,000 family members, and mobilizes approximately 24,000 Reserve and National Guard Soldiers annually.
Fort Hood is also the largest single-site employer in Texas, with more than 14,000 civilian employees and nearly 5,000 contractors. According to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, Fort Hood contributes an estimated $39.09 billion to the state’s economy. (Texas Comptroller’s Memo – 2023)
