FORT HOOD, Texas – The Department of the Army announced today that Fort Hood was among five installations selected to host a nuclear microreactor, with the contract awarded to General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems.
This microreactor is a prototype under the Project Janus Program, which is an initiative designed to accelerate the deployment of advanced, clean energy technologies to support national defense.
“We are proud that Fort Hood has been selected to host a prototype microreactor under the Janus Program, partnered with General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems,” Col. Mark R. McClellan, Fort Hood Garrison commander, said. “This initiative promises to deliver resilient, 24/7 baseload power directly to our installation, ensuring critical defense operations remain secure and uninterrupted under any conditions.”
Under this next-generation nuclear power program, the Army has selected several U.S. nuclear energy vendors and is awarding them up to $2.2 billion to develop, construct, own and operate up to 10 prototype microreactors across selected military installations.
